Tradition Meets Innovation :

The Timeless Legacy &Modern Approach of Our Restaurant Brand Since 1942

Pritam Punjab Hindu Hotel, as it was known in the 40s was the cities first ‘Punjabi Restaurant’ serving food that was unbeknownst to Maharashtrians and quickly enmassed a cult following, including several actors, politicians and businessmen. Pritam has been using the philosophy of slow cooking since then and continues to do so even today – The secret to it’s truly one-of-a-kind culinary experience.

The First Indian Restaurant To Introduce Butter Chicken to Mumbai

While Bollywood stars accelerated the restaurant’s popularity, it’s ultimately all the food here that has created its patrons. Let’s begin with what Pritam takes pride in –bringing butter chicken to the city. But did you know that the dish you enjoy as a gravy preparation today was actually served as a starter when it was first introduced? Yes, you read that right–the dish was served dry with just butter and chicken. It was tandoori chicken tossed with a little bit of yoghurt and spices with butter over the top. It’s hard to imagine eating butter chicken dry. I mean, we all end up licking that gravy from our fingers, right? Come over and try both styles of butter chicken, the old & the new, only at Pritam.

Inaugration by Raj Kapoor

Raj Kapoor was invited to inaugurate the newly renovated restaurant in 1975, when it was converted into the first AC restaurant in Mumbai. Dara Singh, Sunil Dutt and Pran had also attended the event.

From Sunil Dutt to Raaj Kumar, Dharmendra and Shankar-Jaikishan, they relished Pritam's North Indian fare, cooked under supervision of Kulwant Singh Kohli's mother, Harkaur. The restaurant didn't have a menu until 1975, mainly offering Tandoori Chicken, Chicken Masala, Butter Chicken, Mutton Kheema and Fish Fry. At that time, Mumbaikars didn't know what Butter Chicken was. Pritam also offered monthly meals at Rs 19 (once a day) and Rs 38 (twice a day). Many actors were strugglers then, and would opt for these meals.

Pritam’s Bollywood Affair

Among the loyalists that Pritam has acquired over so many years, Bollywood and sports stars made the cut. Raj Kapoor had a great bond with Kulwant Singh Kohli. He loved the food at Pritam so much that whenever he was shooting in the nearby film studios, he and his unit’s food always went from the restaurant. Sunil Gawaskar stayed just behind the restaurant and visited often for a cup of tea with his friends and family. Dharmendra, Dilip Kumar, Pran, among others were equally fond of the food at Pritam.

Old Is Gold

It’s not just the cooking style but also the second and third generation staff that is responsible for retaining the flavours here. “My staff members have been here before I was born, and since the time my dad was a teenager. There are some who have been working because their older siblings or parents were with us,” says Jaibir.“And I think that’s very important. Because if I have someone who’s been making my daals for 25 years, and I lose them, then I have to train someone else in 25 days to do what someone’s been doing for 25 years, which isn’t possible. So it’s very important that I have these people on my team who are able to control both my cooking as well as my service.

A modest roadside stall turned restaurant that offers traditional North Indian and local delicacies. It has a new outlet in Juhu that boasts colourful murals, Dhaba-like seats, exposed brick walls, and an outdoor oasis that replicates the original outlet in Dadar. With a dining area, alfresco, and private room, the restaurant can accommodate up to 140 people. The Kohli family, who run the restaurant, aim to provide the same taste and ambience from the past while catering to a new audience that includes Gen Z. They are excited to expand further in Mumbai based on the positive reviews of their new location.

Trace the journey of Mumbai’s iconic Pritam Hindu Hotel

A dhaba conjures images of a rustic eatery on a highway, with charpoys and robust Punjabi food; usually a pit stop for truck drivers. Yet, Pritam the Dhaba, the first proper dhaba in Mumbai, is right in the heart of the city in Dadar East. Although a separate entity, it is literally the outdoor section of Pritam Restaurant and Bar, which was originally Pritam Hindu Hotel, started in 1942.
